Widows

“Widows” is a great way to kick off the Holiday Season!!

Four woman who have nothing in common eventually come together because their husbands are dead due to their criminal activities and it soon comes to light that a debt was left behind and those who think they are owed come to collect. The story unfolds from there…

“Widows” is a gritty suspenseful drama. The movie is well executed and has lots of intrigue and enough action to keep you interested. Definitely a great way to start the holiday season at the box office.

“Widows” is an excellent collaborative effort between writer Gillian Flynn (“Gone Girl”) and director Steve McQueen III (“12 Years a Slave”).

This is a 4 Star Movie!!

The Judge

In “The Judge”, big city attorney Hank Palmer (Robert Downey Jr.) is summoned back to the Indiana town he grew up in when he is informed that his mother has died. Once he returns to his childhood home Hank attempts to reconnect with his estranged Dad, “The Judge” (Robert Duvall) and re-establish a relationship with the family he walked away from.

Judge Palmer (Robert Duvall) ends up getting arrested for attempted murder when his vintage Cadillac strikes and kills a recently released ex-con that he himself once convicted. The story unfolds from there…

“The Judge” is not a bad movie, but it takes way too long to get to the point. Family dysfunction is the order of the day with the Palmer family. This is played out throughout the movie.

There are at least 5 smaller stories playing out in the movie involving a high school romance rekindled, a mentally challenged younger brother, past transgressions of a father, possible incest and an impending divorce. None of these scenarios have anything to do with the story at hand. This all causes the movie to be disjointed.

There is plenty of star power in “The Judge”, too bad it’s not fully utilized.

This is a 2 1/2 Star Movie!

Jack Reacher

In a Pennsylvania city on a quiet day, 5 random people are shot dead. The would-be sniper is quickly apprehended and only utters one name during his interrogation, “Jack Reacher”. Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) is an enigmatic ex-Army Investigator who is very good at what he does. As Jack teams up with the would-be Sniper’s defense attorney (Rosamund Pike). As Jack starts to lay the foundation and put the pieces together it smells and looks like someone was framed and corruption involving a big-time construction company with a lot to lose. The story unfolds from there…
Tom Cruise plays a very good tough guy and will remind you of a younger Clint Eastwood in his “Hey Days”.
The movie is brisk with plenty of action, suspense and intrigue. It’s one of those “You think you have it Figured Out” type of movies, but you will find out you are wrong. Tom Cruise looks good, he definitely worked out in preparation for this movie.
“Jack Reacher” is worth the price of admission.
