Shaft

This next installment of Shaft find John Shaft Sr. (Samuel L. Jackson) with a son “JJ” (Jessie T. Usher) who is an MIT Graduate and works in Cyber Security with the FBI. When JJ’s best friend is found dead of an accidental drug overdose, JJ starts an investigation of his own, but soon finds he needs the help of his Dad who he has not seen in 25 years. The story unfolds from there…

The paid critics did not like this installment, but I found it to be pretty good. The movie has a time capsule backstory which helps to set the stage. There are some holes in the plot and the overall story is a bit disjointed, but it does all come together toward the end. There is some comic relief, but you have to pay close attention to get it.

There is some NOT SO great acting, but not from the headliners. Samuel L. Jackson plays a good Shaft.

This is a 3 Star Movie!!

Little

“Little” is about a super successful female CEO, Jordan Sanders (Regina Hall) who owns her own company, when the pressures of the day overwhelm her, she is given the chance to go back and relive her care-free youthful life. The story unfolds from there…

“Little” is cute. I expected more laughs. The movie did not turn out as funny as it appeared on trailers and previews. It is however a tastefully done comedy. The teenage set will get a kick out of this movie.
I am sure at one time or another we have all wished to go back to our childhood, in “Little” you get the chance to do just that.

This is a 3 Star Movie!!

Girls Trip

“Girls Trip” is “Hilarious!!” It’s definitely a “Chick Flick”

Four life-long friends have a chance to hang out in New Orleans at the Essence Jazz Festival. They haven’t seen each other in a while, each living their own lives and dealing with their own problems. They leave their regular lives behind to come together for 4 days in the Big Easy to drink, dance, party and act “Buck Wild”. The story unfolds from there…

“Girls Trip” is “Wild, Hilarious, Shocking and Raunchy!!” There are parts of the movie that will make an adult blush!! There is some really “Raunchy” nudity. I laughed out laugh constantly. I do not usually review Comedies because they are usually so insane and stupid to me, but I had to see what these ladies were up to. There is a relatable story in the movie.
Comedian Tiffany Haddish is in the movie and she is just plain crazy funny!

“Girls Trip” is worth a look, but Adults only Please!!

This is a 4 Star Movie!

Barbershop: The Next Cut

After 10 years we get a fresh new appointment at Calvin’s Barbershop on the South-side of Chicago.

The crew that we came to love is still there, but the shop has undergone a major change. Calvin’s is no longer a male only Barbershop. Calvin has a female partner and there are several chairs rented to female hair stylists.
The female hair stylists bring their own brand of hair fashion, drama and gossip.
All in all the shop is very lively. The conversations flow and the quips keep coming and are just enough to keep the customers coming in.

Calvin’s Barbershop becomes more than just a place to get a hair-cut, shave or shampoo. There is real crime and gang problems on the South-side of Chicago and Calvin is tired of the youth dying before they have a chance to grow up.

Calvin’s Barbershop devises a plan to orchestrate a cease-fire for 48 hours. The story unfolds from there…

“Barbershop: The Next Cut” is entertaining, funny, hilarious and at times preachy, but the movie does raise important questions after race, violence and sex.

“Barbershop: The Next Cut” is worth a look if for no other reason than the entertainment factor.

This is a 4 ½ Star Movie!

About Last Night

“About Last Night” is a “Must See” Hilarious Relationship Comedy!

This is a re-make of the 1986 “About Last Night” that starred Demi Moore and Rob Lowe. This up-to-date version has move comedy and raunchiness to it thanks to Kevin Hart.

This new installment closely follows the ups and downs of two couples as they try to figure out what they each want out of a relationship that starts in a bar and moves quickly to the bedroom. One couple has HUGH sexual chemistry right out the gate while the other couple takes things a bit slower deciding to test their relationship by moving in together. The story unfolds from there…

The movie is funny, hilarious, raunchy and entertaining. Kevin Hart is an absolute nut! There is plenty of male and female eye candy throughout the movie. I love the sound track, it includes James Brown at the beginning.

The one small down side is I feel that Paula Patton cannot “Act”. Every time I see her in a movie outside of Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol, I feel ill. She gets these parts to portray a “Sex Pot” and she’s not very convincing. I feel she is trying too hard and it comes across on-screen. Thank heaven she was only in a few scenes.

I would like to point out that this movie is rated “R” and should be. There is sexual content and sexual profanity throughout the movie. “About Last Night” is not suitable for anyone under 17.

“About Last Night” is definitely a “Date Night” movie. Go see it!

The Best Man Holiday

It’s been 15 years since the 1999 “The Best Man” opened. So in 2013 the old college friends attempt to reunite for the Holidays.

Old forgotten rivalries flare and old romances rekindle in this second installation. It seems time does not heel old wounds.

“The Best Man Holiday” has something for everyone, Love, Sex, Romance, Rivalry, Family, Loyalty, Success and Dishonesty. The story does a good job of picking up where the 1999 installment ended.

What makes “The Best Man Holiday” work is the strong cast. Everyone who was in the 1999 movie is back in 2013, plus a few new welcome additions. If you didn’t see the 1999 installment, that’s ok. The gaps get filled in.

Although the movie is entertaining, the mixture/combination of Christian Faith, Comedy and Raunchy Sex don’t fly.
