Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom in IMAX

Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom in IMAX

Happy Holidays!!

I actually saw “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” on Christmas Eve. I needed to think about what I want to say about the movie, so here goes…

It’s been 5 years since the 1st Aquaman installment. In this installment we are reminded that the Black Manta failed to defeat Aquaman previously, so now he wields the power of an Ancient malevolent force that he believes is enough to take Aquaman down. Aquaman on the other hand is looking to end Black Manta’s reign of terror by forming an alliance with his brother, Orm the former King of Atlantis. Aquaman and Orm set aside their differences to join forces to try and take down the Black Manta and save their kingdom once and for all. The story unfolds from there…

The movie gets to the point in a hurry, but there is so much ground to cover that it’s a mess of scenes that are not cohesive. There were attempts of silly humor along the way that really did not make any sense. The scenes that were “Funny” probably weren’t supposed to be.

Unfortunately, this installment stopped trying and it just whimpers out. Jason Momoa does his part, but the movie does really cover any new ground. The IMAX Aspects were not worth the ticket price. This is not the worst DC Comics film, but it makes the Super Hero movie industry look floundering. I am usually excited after seeing a Super Hero episode, but after seeing this Aquaman installment, I will have to think long and hard about seeing another Super Hero movie. I wasn’t in a hurry to write my review because upon leaving the theater I was extremely disappointed. I needed to put everything in perspective before writing anything.

If you did not like the first Aquaman installment, this installment won’t win you over. If you are a DC Comics Hero Fan, then you will probably want to see this installment, so you can make your own judgement.

This is a 1 ½ Star Movie!!

FAST X in AMC IMAX

FAST X in AMC IMAX

The premises of Fast X is about many missions and against impossible odds, Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his family have outsmarted, out-nerved and outdriven every foe in their path. Now, they confront the most lethal opponent they’ve ever faced: A terrifying threat emerging from the shadows of the past who’s fueled by blood revenge, and who is determined to shatter this family and destroy everything–and everyone–that Dom loves, forever. The story unfolds from there…

The first 15 minutes of the movie are awesome and it sets the stage. Unfortunately, this fast-moving vehicle has no driver, crashes and burns. There are way too many sub plots that show up and cause confusion making the movie difficult to follow. Some of the acting is suspect.

This is supposed to be the last installment in this franchise, if that is so, the franchise goes out on a whimper instead of a bang!

The most exciting things about the movie are the car chases and the fact that veteran actress Rita Moreno makes an appearance along with Helen Mirren returning as she was in a previous installment.

I was truly excited about the fact that there was another installment. I have really enjoyed the Fast & Furious Franchise dating back to 2001. This installment leaves me COLD!! I did not enjoy this movie at all and I am very sad about that.

If you are a fan of the Fast & Furious Franchise, you should take look and decide for yourself. Personally spending $22 for an IMAX ticket seems to have been a waste.

This is a 2 ½ Star Movie!!

Dune

Dune

In this first of two installments of “Dune” we learn of a young man who is born into a destiny not of his choosing but is forced to do whatever is necessary to save the future of his family and his planet. In order to do this, he must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe and fight while overcoming his own fears to survive. The story unfolds from there…

Wow! What a visual. The movie is a bit cumbersome in some areas, but that does not take away from the story. The execution of the saga is on point and the casting is AWESOME! Some of the desert scenes reminded me of the 2015 Blockbuster “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “Desert Dirt Flying…”. This is the first of 2 Dune movies and I am excited for the conclusion.

“Dune” is in Theaters and Streaming on HBO MAX until Nov 21st.

It’s best seen on the big screen!

This is a 4 Star Movie!!

Aquaman in Real 3D

DC Comics got this right. Aquaman has a very good back story! It ties in nicely to the over-all story and plot.

“Aquaman” tells the original story of the famed DC Comic’s Undersea Super-hero half-human and half-Atlantean Arthur Curry. The saga takes you on an action packed adventure showing off the breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas. During this adventure Arthur is taken on a journey that forces him to face who he really is and where his place among Atlantis is and if he is worthy of who he was born to be…a king.

“Aquaman” is very entertaining and a visual feast! The movie shows off breathtaking panoramic views of the undersea world. There is tons of action, special effects and intrigue.

This first installment sets the tone. I hope the next installment will be just as visually appealing and entertaining.

This is a 3 ½ Star Movie!!

Justice League in Real 3D

Out of the gate this is NOT one of the DC Universe’s best outings.

There is a new rising threat to humanity. Batman (Bruce Wayne) works with Wonder Woman (Diana Prince) so that they can find and assemble a team of meta-humans to stand and protect against this new rising threat.
Unfortunately the task is not easy. Even though a league of superheroes (Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash) has formed, it may not be enough to battle the new threat. The story unfolds from there…

Superhero Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) is the best element of the film. In this first outing I find the movie a bit lacking. The Justice League members are a bit disassembled in this first installment. The director (Patty Jenkins) for Wonder Woman was definitely missed. The story drags and is missing some foundation and there is too much CGI.

However I did find the cinematography and 3D aspects to be good. There was lots of action, but that too was sort of chaotic.

Hopefully the DC Universe will go back to the drawing board and clean this up before the next installment. I still prefer Christian Bale as Batman, but alas I found out that he does not want to play that role anymore. Earlier this year Wonder Woman set the bar high and it’s still the best film that came from the DC Universe in 2017.

This is a 2½ Star Movie!
